Classes
Jeet Kune Do/Kali
The physical aspects of Jeet Kune Do have a huge emphasise on economy of motion and non-telegraphic movement. The goal is for movement to be simple, direct and efficient, whilst also encouraging students to develop their own personal style based on their own strengths and weaknesses. Less is more, or ‘Strike from the void’, to quote Myamoto Musashi, the legendary Samurai warrior.
Thanks to their weapons training, the empty hand areas of kali develop a sense of flow that perfectly complements the directness of pure JKD.
Julian is certificated to teach Jeet Kune Do and Kali by Bruce Lee’s most senior student: Dan Inosanto.

Muay Thai
Muay Thai is the devastating kickboxing art from Thailand, also known as the ‘Science of Eight Limbs’. It combines punching and kicking with elbows and knees, and while renowned as a striking art, it also has highly evolved clinch/stand up wrestling aspects. It can be brutal, yet beautiful, and many argue it is the most evolved striking art in the world.
Cardio-heavy, the benefits include not just strength and flexibility, but stress relief, boosted confidence and mental focus. An hour or so of smashing the pads will simply make you a better-functioning human for the next day or two.
WEDNESDAYS 6:30pm / WEDNESDAYS 7:30pm
Kali Weapons
Kali is a predominantly weapons-based system from the Philippines (the terms Kali, Arnis and Eskrima are more or less interchangeable, it just depends on whereabouts in the Philippines they are taught).
Stickfighting is enormous fun and really supercharges the student’s understanding of space and angles. As well as improved hand-eye coordination, training with a stick in each hand also has proven advantages for cognitive function.
The knife defence we do is rooted in kali, although we also cover other necessities, such as situational awareness and the law.
Kali also includes some fantastic empty hand material. If you want to know what it looks like, check out Jason Bourne in the first three Bourne films.
Weapons classes are more beginner-friendly than they sound, and they accelerate your understanding of movement and distance in a way that significantly improves your ‘empty hand’ training.
TUESDAYS 7:30pm / THURSDAYS 6:30pm
4D Combat
4D Combat is a system developed by my main teacher and mentor over the last 25 years, Guro Bob Breen. It aims to unite the best bits of JKD and Filipino Kali while making it all far more intuitive.
Bob wanted to create something that would work for normal people yet have all the depth of the arts from which it was derived. The name came about as the system comprises the four dimensions of stand up combat: Striking, Clinching, Weapons, and Group Attack.
THURSDAYS 7:30pm / SATURDAYS 10am
Women-Only Self-Defence
In order to maximise the empowerment of women I teach a combination of ‘reality based’ self–defence techniques and mix them with some traditional kali and kickboxing moves. You’ll get a great workout on the pads learning to kick, punch, knee and elbow which will make you fitter, stronger, more toned and less stressed.
You’ll also learn good situational awareness, from early danger recognition and how to enforce personal boundaries, through to grabs, joint manipulation and escape techniques. I’ll give you a skillset and the courage to use it, and perhaps most importantly, the increased awareness in order to avoid trouble in the first place. I aim to make you a safer, happier, more functional you.
Private Coaching
Just let me know how long I have, and what you would like to focus on. The focus could be self-defence, functional fitness, or a specific area of the arts: Jeet Kune Do, Kali, boxing and kickboxing are all catered for.
